 Alqueva The great Alqueva dam was built in the Alentejo, a region of scarce water, on the Guadiana river, between Moura and Portel, creating the largest artificial lake in Europe. This water plane has 250 km2, extending for more than 80 kms of the course of the old river, with its thousand indentations making up 1,160 kms of perimeter. Downstream of the wall, the Pedrógão Dam was built, clearly visible from the bridge that connects Pedrógão to Moura. The beauty of this artificial lake surprises us, thanks largely to the typical Alentejo landscape that surrounds it, made up of thousands of olive trees, cork oaks and holm oaks, and the remarkable number of fortified villages that defended the area over the centuries and that today guard the lake. |
