"Russia Sidelines Top Military Leader As Ukraine Launches Counterattack

New York (Knewz) — The head of Russia’s defense department has been pushed to the sideline as the country’s war with Ukraine drags on.

A briefing by the U.K. Ministry of Defense on Aug. 29 noted the Russian media has reported that Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has been sidelined by Russian leadership. The move comes as the war with Ukraine hits the six-month mark.

The conflict has lasted much longer than many experts expected, and Ukraine has now launched a counterattack in the southern regions, according to reports.

The U.S. report stated that operational commanders are now directly briefing President Vladimir Putin.

Russian officers and soldiers “probably” routinely ridiculed Russian Defense Minister Shoigu for his ineffectual and out-of-touch leadership, according to the U.K. report.

Experts said that the Russia defense minister has struggled to overcome his reputation for lacking military experience as he spent time in construction before becoming the top military brass.

Reports indicate that Russian leaders and Putin have grown frustrated with the lack of progress in the war. Moscow has also faced economic sanctions in the wake of its February invasion of Ukraine.

The sanctions have led to the closure of Western businesses throughout Russia.

On Aug. 29, Ukraine announced an offense to retake land in the southern parts of the country, according to Reuters. The move comes after the U.S. pledged $3 billion in military aid and European countries continue to provide supplies to Ukraine.

“Today we started offensive actions in various directions, including in the Kherson region,” Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne cited southern command spokeswoman Natalia Humeniuk as saying, according to Reuters."
