There are two major problems with hydrogen. The first and biggest problem is that the hydrogen atom is so small, it leaks out through any container it is confined in. The second, is most hydrogen comes from natural gas, leaving the carbon dioxide to be dealt with. Cracking water to get hydrogen takes a tremendous amount of energy. Solve these problems, then hydrogen can be a viable energy storage source.

Not trying to mock the late Lord Laurence Olivier but, "Is it safe"? Safer than gasoline by far. Gasoline fumes are heaver than air and can build up in enclosed places, till someone turns the light on, or a motor starts, any spark can set it off. If gasoline were to be invented in this day and age, it would be declared illegal because of its explosive properties. Hydrogen is lighter than air will escape the room. Hard for it to build up in most enclosed spaces, because most are not really air tight. Also it won't pool in the street after an accident. One can make Molotov Cocktails with gasoline, much harder to do with hydrogen.

Fortunately, the MAGA nuts have proven to be mostly inept and cowardly when push comes to shove....also not too bright so they will probably light themselves by mistake.
